Deoriatal – Rohini Bugyal is one of the most serene and fulfilling treks to consider across seasons. A perfect weekend trek, Deoriatal trek starts from the small village of Sari. The quaint Sari village is an ideal place to begin your journey into the wilderness. You start from this slow village of Sari and pass through the canopy of rhododendrons and oak forest to reach the first campsite.
Deoriatal is a perfect spot to enjoy the mountain views and soak in the serenity of nature. On a clear day, Mt Chaukamba’s reflection on the pristine lake of Deoriatal is awe-inspiring. To witness Mt Chaukamba looming in the background from your tent is worth every climb. You can also witness the majestic view of the snow-capped peaks of Nilkantha, Bandarpooch, and Kalanag from the lake.
The lake is guarded by beautiful forests covered with pine and rhododendrons. While sitting by the lake, you will witness the mighty Chaukamba looming beyond the lake and the forest.
While the lake serves as a perfect place for immersing yourself in nature, Rohini Bugyal offers you a variety of exotic Himalayan birds. The Bugyal remains hidden amidst the forest and is a playground for migratory birds.
The trek is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Deoriatal holds a significant place in the hearts of locals as it is considered a sacred site bestowed by deities and was once used as a bathing place by them. The pristine lake is revered by the people residing in the nearby villages and is considered holy.
Deoriatal – Rohini Bugyal Bugyal is a perfect escape into the wilderness. Within three days, the trek offers majestic mountain views, flower-laden trails, and the tranquillity of nature to the fullest.
Sari village in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand is the base camp for Deoriatal-Rohini Bugyal Trek. The distance between Dehradun and Sari is around 226 km. It takes around 8-9 hrs to cover the distance between Dehradun and Sari. The drive from Dehradun will traverse via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag.
The trek to Deoriatal starts from the village. Deoriatal is around 4 km from the village. The trail is comfortable and is completed in around 3- 4 hours. You will walk on a well-defined path, that climbs at the beginning of the trail. Deoriatal Campsite is known for mesmerizing sunsets, rich birdlife, and colorful rhododendron blooming.
Once you reach the campsite at Deoriatal, the team then heads towards Rohini Bugyal. The Bugyal is around 8 km away from the campsite at Deoriatal. The Bugyal is a serene meadow nestled amidst the thick rhododendron forests.
You will head back to Dehradun as your experience concludes today. If you wish to stay amidst nature for a few more days, you can opt to stay in a homestay here. If you are ready for more adventure in the wilderness, you can head to Chopta, and hike up to Chandrashila Top. The Tungnath Chandrashilla trek can be done in a day comfortably from Chopta.
Deoriatal- Rohini Bugyal is in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, with its base camp in Sari village. The base camp is around 226 kms and is a 9- 10 hrs drive from Dehradun. Dehradun is well connected by air, train, and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport in Dehradun.
You can book your tickets well in advance till Dehradun to avail yourself of tickets at cheaper rates. You can choose to travel by air from any metro city to Dehradun. The other option is to reach Delhi by air, and travel by train or bus from Delhi onwards.
The trek is 3 days long, we suggest our participants reach Dehradun on Day 0, and not Day 1. It allows you to rest before the trek begins, and ensures you do not miss the OWLS pickup from Dehradun on Day 1.
If you are reaching Dehradun by air, here are a few options for planning your travel. Dehradun Airport is well connected with all the metro cities. You can book a direct or connecting flight to Dehradun. If you are planning to reach Dehradun by air, make sure you reach here on Day 0. Once you reach Dehradun on day zero, book a hotel or dorm near ISBT. Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam is 10 minutes away from ISBT and offers rooms at reasonable rates. They have economical as well as deluxe rooms. OWLS pick-up will be available on Day 1 at ISBT Dehradun.
If you are flying from any city to Delhi, you can opt to travel by bus or train from Delhi onwards. You can book and find your bus option at UTC Online. Try to board a bus or train which will arrive in Dehradun before 5:30 am on Day 1. The pick-up will be at 6 a.m from ISBT. Nanda Devi Express runs daily from Kota to Dehradun, reaches H Nizamuddin at 11.35 p.m, and arrives at Dehradun early in the morning at 5.40 a.m.
There are other options for traveling by train. If it is convenient you can choose to travel in the first half of the day to reach Dehradun at night and have well-deserved rest. Reaching Dehardun early morning on Day 1 will be a hectic affair. We recommend bus over train for cheaper rates and easy availability of buses from Delhi throughout the day.
The total distance of the Deoriatal – Rohini Bugyal trek is around 31km. The average distance you will cover is 6-8 km per day. You will walk for 4-6 hours every day.

If you want to experience snow, plan your trek in winter. It starts snowing in Deoriatal by December end. Plan your trek between December end to February to enjoy snow in abundance.

The most important thing to do on a trek to avoid AMS is to drink water, more than your daily intake. Water is an excellent way to avoid AMS. Along with this, you should also have all the nutritious meals we provide on the trek. If you still are sceptical about getting AMS, we would advise you to carry Diamox tablets with you. However, according to the situation your Outdoor leader will advise whether or not you should take it.
We encourage everyone to trek, even if or not they have a medical condition. We have an in-house doctor at OWLS with whom you can discuss your medical condition and accordingly, we can help you better prepare you for the trek.

Although we provide filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with morning tea and evening snacks, you can carry some light snacks for munching on the trail. You can carry protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara to help you give that extra energy on the trek.
All our Outdoor Leaders are trained and experienced leaders. They have completed basic Mountaineering Course, and are equipped with basic first-aid knowledge. Our leaders are certified Wilderness First Responder course
You don’t need to carry your medical kit. If you have your prescribed medications, you need to carry them on the trek
The accommodation will be on twin sharing basis. One tent will be shared by two trekkers.
Yes. Communicate your requirement to the trek leaders beforehand, as it will be difficult to arrange to offload at the last minute. The offloading charges will be Rs 350 per bag, and your bag should not weigh more than 9 kg.
Note: At OWLs, we suggest our participants carry their backpacks and avoid offloading. However, in case of pressing circumstances, you can opt for offloading.
Yes, you can leave the extra luggage at the base camp. However, do not leave valuables like laptops, jewellery, or any other expensive items in the base camp.
The OWLS team will set up a toilet tent near the campsites. The toilets will be dry toilets and you will have to use toilet paper. There will be a pit dug by the team and you will have to cover your nature’s call with dry soil. Avoid using wet wipes, as they are not biodegradable. At OWLS, we thrive to leave no trace in the mountains.
At the base camp, you will have regular concrete toilets.
The food offered will be as per the nutritional requirements. As you will be walking every day for 4-6 hours, you will be burning a good amount of calories. The team makes sure that the food you will be offered is healthy and helps you sustain through the day. The regular meal comprises eggs, locally grown vegetables, rice, roti, and pulses. The menu changes from day to day.
You will have access to most of the mobile networks at the base camp in Sari. We suggest our participants make important calls while at the base camp. There will be no signals throughout the trek.
