Also referred to as the skeleton lake by the trekkers, Roopkund Trek in Uttarakhand is one of the most coveted trekking destinations. Categorized as one of the most difficult treks to attempt in the Himalayas, the trek is meant for adventure seekers with prior experience in traversing high-altitude regions. 

Roopkund Trek begins from Lohajung village in Chamoli District. The trail passes through dense forest with chirping Himalayan birds keeping you company. If you plan this trek in summer, lush green Bugyals and vibrant rhododendrons dominate the scenery. Besides the scenic landscape, the trek is also a must-do for witnessing the grandeur of Himalayan peaks like Mt. Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti. The distance of the Roopkund Trek is short, roughly 40 km, compared to other tough trekking routes that extend beyond 90 to 100 km. But, the altitude gain is significant and the terrain is strenuous. Long walking hours on demanding sections like Junairgali require dedicated physical preparation by trekkers. If you wish to experience the enigmatic Roopkund, start working on your fitness right away.  

Best time to visit the toughest Himalayan treks in India 

The best time to visit the toughest treks in India is either early summer, between May and June, or towards September to October. Treks like Roopkund, Goechala, Stok Kangri Peak and Trishul Base Camp receive heavy snowfall during the winter months. The trails remain covered in the snow till early April, making it accessible for a short window. 

All the difficult Himalayan treks climb to an altitude above 1,5000 ft except a few. Navigating such staggering altitudes is difficult during winter and spring seasons with extreme weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures. 

For treks like Chadar in Ladakh, winter is the best and only preferable season to embark on the journey. Chadar Trek is renowned for an adrenaline-pumping walk on a frozen Zanskar river and opens for trekkers in the peak winter months. Trekkers attempt the Chadar Trek between January and February when the river remains completely frozen. 

How to get fit for the trek 

Preparation is the key to enjoying a trekking experience wholeheartedly. Before embarking on any of the difficult treks in India, your primary focus should be working on your endurance and strength. The treks traverse demanding terrain accompanied by harsh weather conditions and freezing temperatures. Tackling such strenuous walks at higher altitudes demands impeccable endurance. 

We suggest our trekkers begin their preparation at least 3 to 4 months before the trek date.

Sample workout for difficult treks

For difficult treks like Pin Bhaba Pass and Bali Pass, you will traverse challenging terrains for 7 to 12 days. The difficult treks take you to an altitude above 15,000 ft. 

Note – The time duration of each workout is 60 minutes with high intensity. Along with strength-building exercises, improve cardiovascular endurance and time to complete 5 km in 35 to 32 minutes.
