Trishul Base Camp Trek is an adventure-filled experience that takes you to the base of two majestic mountains, Mt. Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti. As you embark on a culturally rich trail, the trek offers experiences beyond adventures. Along the way, you will encounter historical and religious sites, such as Homkund and Shila Samunder, the final legs of the historical Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra. These sites offer a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of the region, making the trek a truly unforgettable experience.

While the trek demands you to trudge through strenuous trails, every climb is worth exploring. This Himalayan journey offers an array of mesmerising Himalayan landscapes.

Trishul Basecamp with Ronti Saddle Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Dehradun (2,150 ft.) to Wan (7900 ft.)

On Day 1, the OWLS team travels to the base camp, Wan, a remote village situated on the Eastern Garhwal side of the Himalayas.

OWLS organizes the transport from Dehradun to Wan. The taxi leaves OWLS pick-up point, Inter State Bus Stand, Dehradun (ISBT Dehradun) at 6 a.m. 

Your journey to Wan is exhilarating as it traverses mountain roads and dense coniferous forests. You will travel on meandering mountain roads while Alkannada and Baghirathi keep you company, flowing in opposite directions. Once it digresses at Karnaprayag, the road leads you to the sleepy towns of Tharali and Deval before finally reaching Wan. 

Note: Fare for a 5-7 seater cab will be Rs. 9000 per vehicle, and the cost of a 12-seater Tempo Traveller is Rs. 12000. This amount will be shared among the participants and paid directly to the driver.

Day 2 : Wan (8,200 ft.) to ghairoli Patal (11,700 ft.)

The journey to the base camp of two majestic peaks kicks off in Wan on Day 2. As soon as you finish breakfast, you begin your journey to the first campsite at Ghairoli Patal. It takes around 4 – 6 hours to cover the distance of 6 km. 

You will be mesmerized to pass through a heavenly forest trail today. Himalayan flora and fauna brighten your day as you trudge your way to the campsite. You witness a first glimpse of mighty Mt Trishul from the campsite.

Day 3 : Ghairoli Patal (11,700 ft) to Pathar Nachauni (12,500 ft)

It is a long and tiring day today as you hike for around 9 hours, covering a distance of 9 km. Although an exhausting day, you will be mesmerized by the vast spread of verdant grasslands when Bedni Bugyal welcomes you. Majestic Mt Nanda Ghunti, Chaukamba and Mt. Trishul play hide and seek, enticing you to discover more.

Day 4 : Pathar Nachauni (11,700 ft.) to Bhagwabasa (14,100 ft.)

The distance covered during this climb is shorter than the previous days. However, there is a significant elevation gain, which can make you feel exhausted. The journey begins from the Patar Nachauni campsite and involves a steep ascent towards Kalu Vinayak, a temple on the way to Bhagwabasa. After reaching Kalu Vinayak, the trail descends towards Bhagwabasa. This place offers a magnificent view of Mt Nanda Ghnuti, Mt Trishul and Chaukhamba. 

Day 5 : Acclimatisation at Bhagwabasa (14,100 ft.)

As you gain substantial altitude, the team rests at the Bhagwabasa campsite to acclimatize. You can go on a short hike to explore the dreamy meadows of Bedni.

Day 6 : Bhagwabasa (14,100 ft.) to Sila Samumnder (13,000 ft) via Roopkund (15,750 ft.) and Junargali (16,000 ft.).

The team starts early on Day 6 and crosses Sila Samunder, a rocky boulder patch. You will hike to Sila Samunder via Junargali. A steep climb takes you to Junargali Top situated at 16,000ft. After immersing yourself in the mesmerising views of breathtaking snow-studded peaks, the descent to Sila Samunder begins where you will camp for the night.

Day 7 : Sila Samumnder (13,000 ft) to Trishul Basecamp (15,700 ft)

The summit day is here. The team heads to the summit in the wee hours to witness the glistening peaks of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti.

Day 8 : Summit Day - TBC (15,700 ft) to Ronti Saddle (17,200 ft) via Homkund (16,200 ft) and back to TBC

The summit day is here. It is a long hike and you are in for some thrilling adventures along the way. The team heads to the summit in the wee hours to witness the glistening Ronti Peaks, Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti. 

A steep and strenuous climb from Homkund takes you to the top. When you reach the top of Ronti Saddle, you witness the grandeur of the Himalayan peaks. The team thanks the mountain gods as towering snow-clad peaks mesmerize you. After immersing in the splendour of the Himalayas, the descent to the base begins.

Day 9 : TBC (15,700 ft) to Latakopdi (8,700 ft)

After the successful summit climb, the team begins descending to Latkhopdi. You will pass through a forest and cross an icy cold river along the way. The campsite is nestled amidst a forest area. The team reaches the campsite in Latakhopdi in the evening and rests for the night.

Day 10 : Latakopdi (8,700 ft) to Sutol (7000 ft)

Sutol is around 10 km from the campsite of Latakhopdi. You will be back in civilization by evening today. A picturesque descent to Sutol village begins early in the morning. The team reaches the village in the evening.

Day 11 : Drive back to Dehradun (2,150 ft.)

After breakfast, the team leaves for Dehradun. A bag full of adrenaline rush and memories takes you back to the city. The journey to Dehradun begins early in the morning, and you will reach Dehradun late in the evening.

How to reach the start point of Trishul Basecamp trek?

✈️Nearest Airport – Jolly Grant International Airport, Dehradun

🚉 Nearest Railway Station – Dehradun Railway Station

The base camp of Trishul Base Camp Trek is Wan. The village is around 250 km, and around 10- 11 hrs drive from Dehradun.  Dehradun is well connected by air, train, and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport in Dehradun. You can book your tickets well in advance till Dehradun to avail yourself of tickets at cheaper rates. You can choose to travel by air from any metro city to Dehradun. The other option is to reach Delhi by air and travel by train or bus from Delhi onwards. 

OWLS facilitates transportation arrangements for our participants from Dehradun to Lohajung. The pick-up point will be at the Inter-State Bus Stand, Dehradun (ISBT Dehradun). Reach the designated pickup location by 6 AM.

Trishul Base Camp experience is 12 days long.  We suggest our participants reach Dehradun on Day 0 and not Day 1. It allows you to rest well before the trek begins. 

Here is a step-by-step guide to reach Dehradun

  • Reach Dehradun by air or train on Day 0
  • Fly to Delhi and board a bus or train to reach Dehradun on Day 0
  • OWLS pickup will be available in Dehradun on Day 1 at ISBT, Dehradun 

Travel Plan A, By Air till Dehradun

For those arriving in Dehradun by air, consider the following travel options. Dehradun Airport boasts excellent connectivity with major metropolitan cities, offering both direct and connecting flights. If you intend to reach Dehradun by air, ensure your arrival is scheduled for Day 0. Once you arrive in Dehradun on day zero, book a hotel or dorm near ISBT.  Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam’s hotel is 10 minutes away from ISBT and offers rooms at reasonable rates. They have economical as well as deluxe rooms. OWLS pick-up will be available on Day 1 at ISBT Dehradun. 

Travel Plan B by train/ bus from Delhi 

This option will be economical for you. Flight to Dehradun will be slightly priced higher than flight to Delhi. To cut down your travel budget, fly to Delhi, then catch a bus or train from Delhi to Dehradun. 

You can book and find your bus option at UTC Online or Redbus. Another option is to go to Kashmere Gate and book a bus offline. Try to board a bus or train which will arrive in Dehradun on the evening of Day 0. Reaching Dehradun on Day 0 helps you to rest before your trek starts on Day 1. 

If you want to travel overnight, Nanda Devi Express runs daily.  The train departs from H. Nizamuddin at 11.35 PM and arrives at Dehradun early at 5.40 AM. 

Overnight Volvo AC buses also run frequently between Delhi and Dehradun. It takes 6-7 hours to get to Dehradun from Delhi. 

How to plan your return flight/train to Delhi 

Trishul Base Camp Trek is 12 days long, including travel to and from the base camp. The team will be back in Dehradun on Day 3. You reach Dehradun in the evening, between 7 to 8 pm. 

While returning, you can fly directly out of Dehradun to your city. The second option is to travel by bus or train to Delhi. 

If you go with the first option, you can book a direct flight from Dehradun to your city on Day 4. 

The second option requires you to travel to Delhi by train or bus.  Once you reach Dehradun in the evening, you can head to ISBT Dehradun and book an AC Volvo bus to Delhi and travel comfortably. The other option to reach Delhi from Dehradun is to book a train. 

If you prefer the second option, book a flight that departs late morning or early afternoon of Day 5. The overnight buses from Dehradun arrive in Delhi in the wee hours. Book a flight departing in the afternoon to avoid rushing. 

Some trekkers prefer to stay back for a day and use the buffer day to explore Rishikesh or Mussoorie. You can either stay for a night and explore Dehradun city or proceed home the same evening if flying out of Delhi.

FAQ

How should I prepare to avoid AMS?

The most important thing to do on a trek to avoid AMS is to drink water, more than your daily intake. Water is an excellent way to avoid AMS. Along with this, you should also have all the nutritious meals we provide on the trek. If you still are sceptical about getting AMS, we would advise you to carry Diamox tablets with you. However, according to the situation your Outdoor leader will advise whether or not you should take it.

I have a medical condition. Can I join the trek?

We encourage everyone to trek, even if or not they have a medical condition. We have an in-house doctor at OWLS with whom you can discuss your medical condition and accordingly, we can help you better prepare you for the trek.

What document do I need to carry?

Should I bring snacks to eat on the trek?

Although we provide filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with morning tea and evening snacks, you can carry some light snacks for munching on the trail. You can carry protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara to help you give that extra energy on the trek. 

Who will be leading my trek?

All our Outdoor Leaders are trained and experienced leaders. They have completed basic Mountaineering Course, and are equipped with basic first-aid knowledge. Our leaders are certified Wilderness First Responders. 

Do I need to get my medical kit for the trek?

You don’t need to carry your medical kit. If you have your prescribed medications, you need to carry them on the trek

What kind of arrangement is available for accommodation on the trek?

The accommodation will be on twin sharing basis. One tent will be shared by two trekkers. 

Is there any arrangement for offloading on the trek?

Yes. Communicate your requirement to the trek leaders beforehand, as it will be difficult to arrange to offload at the last minute. The offloading charges will be Rs 700 per bag per day, and your bag should not weigh more than 9 kg. Your beg will be carried by high altitude porters on this trek.,

Note: At OWLs, we suggest our participants carry their backpacks and avoid offloading. However, in case of pressing circumstances, you can opt for offloading.

Is there any option to keep our luggage at the base camp?

No, you can not leave the extra luggage at the start point. As this is a crossover trek, we will not be coming back to same point. You can leave your extra luggage at Dehradun if you have any, You can directly ask for help at hotel in Dehradun. OWLS team also does the same.

What will be the toilet facilities on the trek?

The OWLS team will set up a toilet tent near the campsites. The toilets will be dry toilets and you will have to use toilet paper. There will be a pit dug by the team and you will have to cover your nature’s call with dry soil. Avoid using wet wipes, as they are not biodegradable. At OWLS, we thrive to leave no trace in the mountains. 

At the base camp, you will have regular concrete toilets.

What will be the food arrangement on the trek?

The food offered will be as per the nutritional requirements. As you will be walking every day for 5-7 hours, you will be burning a good amount of calories. The team makes sure that the food you will be offered is healthy and helps you sustain through the day. The regular meal comprises eggs, locally grown vegetables, rice, roti, and pulses. The menu changes from day to day. 

What will be the status of the mobile network on the trek?

The mobile networks become scanty once you leave the start point, Wan. We suggest you make calls from Wan. There will be no signals throughout the trek. There will be no access to charging points on the T.B.C with Ronti Saddle trek. The network will be available once you cross over to Sutol. 

 

How safe is the T.B.C with Ronti Saddle?

At OWLs, we prioritize the safety of our participants above everything else. Our team of Outdoor Leaders is certified to lead trekkers on a trek like Pin Bhaba. They are NOLS First Responders approved Outdoor Leaders. 

Our team is equipped with the medical assistance required for our participants. Up in the mountains, the trekkers often fall prey to Acute Mountain Sickness. AMS can hit anyone, irrespective of their trek experience. Our Leaders are well-trained to handle the situation and ensure the safety of our trekkers. We engage in the Health Assessment of our trekkers right at the base camp. It helps us respond in case of any untoward situation.
