There are very few high-altitude Bugyal treks in India, and the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek in Uttarakhand is one of the treks with the most beautiful spread of awe-inspiring meadows. The lush green meadows with the majestic view of the colossal Mount Trishul right in front of you and an unforgettable trail through a dense and quaint forest are what define this trail.
Ali Bedni Trek is what we call a trek that offers postcard-perfect views. The trek with Rhododendron and Oak trees along with the trail transports you to a fairyland and offers you the splendour of mountain peaks. The verdant grassland spreads like a green carpet welcoming you. The vastness of the grassland piques you to find its end, and all you discover is undulated meadows, one after another. Walking barefoot on these soft grass-covered meadows is an experience of a lifetime.
At 7120m above sea level, the towering Trishul Parvat stands like a guarding deity. The grandeur of the mountain peaks welcomes you to the breathtaking wilderness of Ali Bugyal. One of the largest meadows in Asia, the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is perfect for beginners to start their outdoor journey.
On Day 1, you reach the base camp of Ali Bedni Bugyal Lohajung, a remote village situated in the Eastern Garhwal side of the Himalayas.
OWLS organizes the transport from Dehradun to Lohajung. The taxi leaves the OWLS pick-up point, Inter State Bus Stand, Dehradun (ISBT Dehradun) at 6 AM. Thedistance of around 293 Kms is covered in 9-10 hours. On the first day of the trek, our participants reach the base camp Lohajung. The drive to Lohajung itself is exhilarating as it traverses through mountain roads and thick forests of pine and deodar along the roads.
Note: Fare for a 5-7 seater cab will be Rs. 6,500 per vehicle and the cost of a 12-seater Tempo Traveller is Rs. 9,500. This amount will be shared by the participants and paid directly to the driver.
You start from the base camp Lohajung on Day 2 of your Ali Bedni Experience. To reach the first campsite of Didna, you will have to cross patches of some steep ascent on the trail. You will walk along the forest-covered trail with varieties of birds and flora to keep you company. In spring, the trail will be laden with Rhododendron of different shades turning the forest a sight to behold.
The trail is moderate to difficult today. There are some gradual ascents along with a comfortable walk. The highlight of the day is walking on the soft velvety grass of Ali meadows. You will reach the meadow and experience the vastness of the green carpet while enjoying the towering mountains in front of you. The undulating meadows of Ali Bedni spread over acres with no sight of its end. You cannot help but immerse yourself in the vastness of the mesmerising meadows of Ali.
Besides meadows, you will enjoy the clear mountain views on the trail. In the winter months, the view of the mountains is crisper. On the trail, you will also witness the grandeur of Mt. Chaukhamba gazing at you from distance.
Today, you will climb to the top of Bedni Bugyal. The trail is easy up to the Bedni Bugyal. It becomes steep once you start climbing to the top of Bedni Bugyal. Bedni Bugyal is one of the prettiest alpine meadows. The undulating meadows spread like a wave of happiness covered with lush green carpet. Come winter, the meadow turns all white making it a perfect winter wonderland.
When you reach the Bedni Top, the highest point of the Bedni Bugyal you will witness towering Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghumti right in front of you.
The feeling when you reach the top and encounter the grandeur of the mountains and the vastness of meadows is an experience worth every step.
After spending some time by the meadows and enjoying the mountain views from the top you will start your descent towards Gairoli Patal. You will traverse through the Oak and Rhododendron forests to reach Ghairoli Patal and camp here.
The trail is moderate today. You will face some gradual and steep descent till you reach the Neel Ganga river. You can halt by the river and enjoy the sound of its gushing flow. After spending some time you can start your walk towards Wan Village where you will halt for the night before parting for Dehradun the next day.
Wan is a quaint village with traditional Garhwali houses still intact. You can explore the village in the evening and understand the slow-paced yet content life people lead here.
On Day 6 of the trek, you will be back in Dehradun between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. If you are booking an onward journey, make sure to keep some buffer hours. We suggest OWLS participants keep a buffer day for emergencies. Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is 6 days long, however, it is safe to keep an extra 7th day outside the itinerary in case of bad weather, landslides, or any unavoidable circumstances. If you don’t use the buffer day, you can always explore Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Mussoorie.
The starting point for the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is Lohajung, a quaint village situated in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal region in the Himalayas. It is advisable to carefully plan your journey to the nearest airport or railway station ahead of time, as the base camp is approximately a 9 to 10-hour drive from Dehradun city.
OWLS facilitates transportation arrangements for our participants from Dehradun to Lohajung. The pick-up point will be at the Inter-State Bus Stand, Dehradun (ISBT Dehradun). Reach the designated pickup location by 6 AM.

For those arriving in Dehradun by air, consider the following travel options. Dehradun Airport boasts excellent connectivity with major metropolitan cities, offering both direct and connecting flights. If you intend to reach Dehradun by air, ensure your arrival is scheduled for Day 0. Once you arrive in Dehradun on day zero, book a hotel or dorm near ISBT. Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam’s hotel is 10 minutes away from ISBT and offers rooms at reasonable rates. They have economical as well as deluxe rooms. OWLS pick-up will be available on Day 1 at ISBT Dehradun.
This option will be economical for you. Flight to Dehradun will be slightly priced higher than flight to Delhi. To cut down your travel budget, fly to Delhi, then catch a bus or train from Delhi to Dehradun.
You can book and find your bus option at UTC Online or Redbus. Another option is to go to Kashmere Gate and book a bus offline. Try to board a bus or train which will arrive in Dehradun on the evening of Day 0. Reaching Dehradun on Day 0 helps you to rest before your trek starts on Day 1.
If you want to travel overnight, Nanda Devi Express runs daily. The train departs from H. Nizamuddin at 11.35 PM and arrives at Dehradun early at 5.40 AM.
Overnight Volvo AC buses also run frequently between Delhi and Dehradun. It takes 6-7 hours to get to Dehradun from Delhi.
Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is approximately 31 km long. You will be hiking an average of 3-5 km a day.
Ali Bedni is one of the most beginner-friendly Himalayan treks. Beginners who wish to start trekking can choose Ali Bedni as your introductory Himalayan trek. As the trail is comfortable, trekkers between the ages of 8-60 years can opt for this trek. These are the minimum and maximum ages of our participants.
Ali Bedni Bugyal is an easy to moderate trek. The trek spreads over six days through an easy-to-moderate trail and some steep ascents and descents. It climbs to an altitude of 12,550 ft. The difficulty of the trek depends a lot on your preparedness. If you come physically prepared, you can explore the trail comfortably.
Ali Bedni Bugyal’s temperature dips down to sub-zero in winter. Ali Bedni records -2 to -5 degrees in peak winter months. The maximum temperature ranges between 6 to 10 degrees.
The best time to visit Ali Bedni Bugyal is summer and winter. In summer, the meadow resembles a lush green carpet. Verdant valleys abloom with vibrant wildflowers enhance the beauty. Trekkers love Ali Bedni Bugyal during the winter months when the Bugyal turns into a magical wonderland.

The most important thing to do on a trek to avoid AMS is to drink water, more than your daily intake. Water is an excellent way to avoid AMS. Along with this, you should also have all the nutritious meals we provide on the trek. If you still are sceptical about getting AMS, we would advise you to carry Diamox tablets with you. However, according to the situation your Outdoor leader will advise whether or not you should take it.

Although we provide filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with morning tea and evening snacks, you can carry some light snacks for munching on the trail. You can carry protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara to help you give that extra energy on the trek.
All our Outdoor Leaders are trained and experienced leaders. They have completed basic Mountaineering Course, and are equipped with basic first-aid knowledge. Our leaders are certified Wilderness First Responder course
You don’t need to carry your medical kit. If you have your prescribed medications, you need to carry them on the trek
The accommodation will be on twin sharing basis. One tent will be shared by two trekkers.
Yes. Communicate your requirement to the trek leaders beforehand, as it will be difficult to arrange to offload at the last minute. The offloading charges will be Rs 350 per bag, and your bag should not weigh more than 9 kg.
Note: At OWLs, we suggest our participants carry their backpacks and avoid offloading. However, in case of pressing circumstances, you can opt for offloading.
Yes, you can leave the extra luggage at the base camp. However, do not leave valuables like laptops, jewellery, or any other expensive items in the base camp.
The OWLS team will set up a toilet tent near the campsites. The toilets will be dry toilets and you will have to use toilet paper. There will be a pit dug by the team and you will have to cover your nature’s call with dry soil. Avoid using wet wipes, as they are not biodegradable. At OWLS, we thrive to leave no trace in the mountains.
At the base camp, you will have regular concrete toilets.
The food offered will be as per the nutritional requirements. As you will be walking every day for 4-6 hours, you will be burning a good amount of calories. The team makes sure that the food you will be offered is healthy and helps you sustain through the day. The regular meal comprises eggs, locally grown vegetables, rice, roti, and pulses. The menu changes from day to day.
You will have access to most of the mobile networks at the base camp in Lohajung. We suggest our participants make important calls while at the base camp. There will be no signals throughout the trek.
The last ATM will be in Karnaprayag.
Carry a sufficient amount of cash with them. Since the base camp is situated away from the cities and lacks basic facilities like ATMs and digital payment options, it is always better to be prepared.
You can carry the cash for cab fare and food to and from the base camp. We suggest carrying a minimum of 5-6k to ensure you have enough funds for your journey.
It is recommended to drink water from natural sources when acclimatizing to the temperature of the mountains. Since resources are limited at high altitudes, we do not provide hot water. However, during the winter months, when natural water sources freeze, we do provide water to our participants. Another reason for avoiding hot water on our trek is to prevent health issues such as diarrhoea.
