The journey begins from a place called Chopta and takes 2 to 4 hours to reach the temple. Chandrashila’s top is approximately 1 km from Tungnath. A steep ascent takes you to the summit of Chandrashila, renowned for its panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba. Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath.

Begin early morning from Chopta. A gradual climb on a well-paved trail marks the beginning of the trek. While the trek traverses a well-trodden path, the altitude gain is quick. Trekkers can rent a wooden trekking stick for a minimal amount at the base of Chopta.
After the initial few minutes, undulated clearings greet you, bordered by the majestic presence of coniferous trees lining one side of the meadow. There is a dhaba, offering tea and snacks. From the first Dhaba, the ascent becomes steep, demanding trekkers to navigate the trail one step at a time.
The trail to Tungnath – Chandrashila trek winds through majestic landscapes, and snow-studded peaks looming in the distance stand sentinel for most of the trail. As you advance on the trail, lush green meadows unfold before you, dotted with grazing sheep and horses, painting a postcard-perfect scenery.
While the picturesque journey to Tungnath Trek enthrals you, reaching the Tungnath Trek has a calming effect on your mind as you enter one of the highest Shiva temples in the world. Tungnath, perched at 12,073 ft is the highest of the Panch Kedar.
The distance between Tungnath and Chandrashila is approximately 1.5 km. A steep climb takes you to Chandrashila Top. The view from the top is breathtaking, as the snow-studded peaks of Chaukhamba, Bandarpooch, Nanda Devi, Panchchuli, and Neelkanth mesmerize you. On the other side, the sprawling lush green Garhwal valley makes a perfect backdrop.
Chopta Tungath trek is a perfect escape for bott beginners and experienced trekkers. It is one of the most loved treks in Uttarakhand for all the perfect reasons. If majestic Himalayan peaks, snow and wilderness excite you, Tungnath must be on your bucket list.
There is no direct bus from Dehradun to Chopta. Here are a few options to plan your travel to Chopta.
Chopta, referred to as the mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand is known for its velvety meadows, snow-studded Himalayan peaks, and rich flora and fauna. Tucked away in the pristine lap of nature, Chopta is a haven for nature lovers. The place is a paradise for bird lovers as it is home to more than 200 species of birds.
Chopta is an ideal weekend getaway, offering pleasant weather and abundant natural beauty. You will be greeted with delightful weather and cool temperatures during the summer months. Chopta temperature ranges between 12°C to 25°C during summers. Winter experiences freezing temperatures between 7°C to – 4°C.
The place embraces refreshing colours during the summer months as vibrant rhododendrons splash a colour riot. Come autumn and the crisp mountain views enrapture your soul. As winter arrives, Chopta transforms into a snow-clad fairyland.
The distance between Chopta and Tungnath is approximately 4 km. It takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Tungnath temple, depending on your pace. Chandrashila is located 1.5 km from Tungnath and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the summit. The Tungnath to Chandrashila trail begins with a gradual walk for the first few minutes and turns into a steep ascent for the rest of the journey.
You will be walking on a narrow trail with jaw-dropping landscapes around you.
Once you reach the summit, the views of snow-studded Himalayan peaks mesmerize you, captivating you in the moment. After immersing yourself in the tranquil bliss of breathtaking mountains, descend to the temple and offer your prayers at one of the highest Shiva temples in the world.

Travel plan to Chopta Tungnath trek
Tungnath trek is in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, with its base camp in Chopta. The base camp is around 221 km and is a 9- 10 hr drive from Dehradun. For the Chopta Tungnath trek, you have to travel to Dehradun. The state capital is well connected by air, train, and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport in Dehradun.
Dehradun to Chopta Travel Plan
There is no direct bus from Dehradun to Chopta. Here are a few options to plan your travel to Chopta.
The base camp Raithal is around 293 km and is a 10- 11 hrs drive from Dehradun. Dehradun is easily accessible by air, train and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport in Dehradun. You can book your tickets well in advance till Dehradun to avail of tickets at cheaper rates. You can choose to travel by air from any metro city to Dehradun. The other option is to reach Delhi by air and travel by train or bus from Delhi onwards.
If you are reaching Dehradun by air, here are a few options for planning your travel. Dehradun Airport is well connected with all the metro cities. You can book a direct or connecting flight to Dehradun. If you plan to reach Dehradun by air, ensure to land in Dehradun on Day 0.
Dehradun city is 32 km away from the Jollygrant Airport. It takes 1 hour to reach the city. You can opt to hire a cab/auto directly from the Airport. The other option is to exit the Airport complex and book an auto. The charges for prepaid cabs at the airport are exorbitant. Another low-cost alternative to get to Dehradun city is to travel on a city bus. Walk towards the Dehradun – Rishikesh highway and hop on a shared auto or city bus. You will have to wait for the bus. Regular city buses run between Dehradun and Rishikesh almost every half an hour.
If you land in Dehradun on day 0, book a hotel or dorm near ISBT, Dehradun. Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam’s hotel is 10 minutes away from ISBT and offers rooms at reasonable rates. They have economical as well as deluxe rooms.
This option will be economical for you. A flight to Dehradun will be slightly priced higher than a flight to Delhi. To cut down your travel budget, fly to Delhi, then get on a bus or train from Delhi to Dehradun.
You can book and find bus options at UTC Online or Redbus. Another option is to go to Kashmere Gate and book a bus offline. Try to board a bus or train which will arrive in Dehradun on the evening of Day 0. Reaching Dehradun on Day 0 helps you to rest before your trek starts on Day 1.
If you want to travel overnight, Nanda Devi Express runs daily and departs from H. Nizamuddin at 11.35 p.m. and arrives at Dehradun early at 5.40 a.m. Overnight Volvo AC buses also run frequently between Delhi and Dehradun. It takes 6-7 hours to get to Dehradun from Delhi.
The trek is 3 days long, including travel to and from the base camp. The team will be back in Dehradun on Day 3. You reach Dehradun in the evening, between 7 to 8 pm.
While returning you can fly directly out of Dehradun to your city. The second option is to travel by bus or train to Delhi.
If you go with the first option, you can book a direct flight from Dehradun to your city on Day 7, (Day 8, if you keep one buffer day).
The second option requires you to travel to Delhi by train or bus. Once you reach Dehradun in the evening, you can head to ISBT Dehradun and book an AC Volvo bus to Delhi and travel comfortably. The other option to reach Delhi from Dehradun is to book a train.
If you prefer the second option, book a flight that leaves in the late morning or early afternoon of Day 5. Get an overnight bus or train from Dehradun then reach Delhi in the early morning. You will have enough buffer time if you have booked an afternoon flight.
Some trekkers prefer to stay back for a day and use the buffer day to explore Rishikesh or Mussories. You can either stay for a night and explore Dehradun city or proceed home the same evening if flying out of Delhi.
Tungnath Trek is located near Ukimath in Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand.
The total distance of Tungnath Trek is 5 km. Trekkers combine Tungnath trek with Chandrashila. The distance between Tungnath and Chandrashila is around 1.5 km.
The trek starts from Chopta. Chopta is a renowned getaway in Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. It takes around 9 to 10 hours to reach Chopta from Dehradun.

Tungnath Trek temperature ranges between 12Peru to 19°C during the day in summer. Night remains colder than the day and you will experience temperatures between 10°C to 8°C. Autumn season experiences lower temperatures. Expect a minimum of 4°C to 18°C between September and October.
The temperatures in winter drop to subzero. You will experience a freezing temperature of -6°C to 7°C from December to February in Tungnath Chandrashila.
The best time to visit the Tungnath Chadrashila trek is in the summer and autumn.
Each season of Tungnath trek charms you with its captivating beauty. The summer months of May and June greet you with vibrant hues. Meadows along the trail embrace lush green colour and dotted flowers enhance the beauty of these grasslands.
September to November is perfect for basking in the ethereal beauty of crisp mountains from Chandrashilla top.
Avoid the peak monsoon season between July to August. Though the trek remains accessible, the view along the way remains engulfed in clouds and mist.
If you prefer cold weather you can attempt this trek in winter months. The trail transforms into a winter wonderland and remains covered in a white blanket of snow.
Tungnath is one of the most popular winter treks. If you plan your trek between December and March, there will be abundant snow on the trail and at the summit.
If you camp for a night, it takes 2 days to complete the Tungnath Trek. Add two more days for travelling to and from the base camp. Many trekkers complete the trek from Chopta to Tungnath in a day.
The trek takes to the highest altitude of 12,073ft. The trek starts from Chopta, located at an altitude of 8,888 ft.
Tungnath is a beginner-friendly trek. You can attempt this trek on your own as the trail is well marked. However, it is important to conduct thorough research before finalising your guides if you are planning to go solo.
If you maintain a regular fitness routine, you can comfortably complete the Tungnath Trek. It is an easy beginner-friendly trek suitable for first-timers.
Ukhimath/Chamoli is the last place with an ATM.
Tungnath Trek offers limited mobile network coverage. You will have access to a scanty network on some parts of the trail, however, expect no network at the top.
The most important thing to do on a trek to avoid AMS is to drink water, more than your daily intake. Water is an excellent way to prevent AMS. Along with this, you should also have all the nutritious meals we provide on the trek. If you still are sceptical about getting AMS, we would advise you to carry Diamox tablets with you. However, according to the situation your Outdoor leader will advise whether or not you should take it.

Although we provide filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with morning tea and evening snacks, you can carry some light snacks for munching on the trail. You can carry protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara to help you give that extra energy on the trek.
All our Outdoor Leaders are trained and experienced leaders. They have completed basic Mountaineering Course, and are equipped with basic first-aid knowledge. Our leaders are certified Wilderness First Responder course
You don’t need to carry your medical kit. If you have your prescribed medications, you need to carry them on the trek
You can carry your tent. The other option is to book a tent at the top through the locals at the base in Chopta. While some dhabas at the top offer tents on rent, book your stay in advance to avoid the last-minute hassle.
There are several options for a luxury tent stay near Chopta.
Yes. Communicate your requirement to the trek leaders beforehand, as it will be difficult to arrange to offload at the last minute. The offloading charges will be Rs 350 per bag, and your bag should not weigh more than 9 kg.
Note: At OWLs, we suggest our participants carry their backpacks and avoid offloading. However, in case of pressing circumstances, you can opt for offloading.
Yes, you can leave the extra luggage at the base camp. However, do not leave valuables like laptops, jewellery, or any other expensive items in the base camp.
There are no toilet or washroom facilities on the trek. You can request the dhaba owners to allow you to use their washroom if you are camping for a night. You have to carry your tent to camp at Tungnath.
You will find dhabas along the way. At the top, some dhabas serve full-fledged meals. Most of these dhabas serve Maggi and tea. You can also look for a cafe that serves Parathas or Dal Chawal.
There are a few options for dhabas at the base. They serve parathas, veg thali, maggi etc.
Tungnath trek has a well-paved stone trail from the base to the Tungnath. From Tungnath to Chandrashila the trail becomes narrow and you must navigate cautiously.
Though it is safe to trek to Tungnath, be cautious of altitude sickness as you are trekking to 12,000 ft above sea level. Avoid trekking during monsoons as it rains heavily in the region.
A moderate fitness level helps you to complete these treks comfortably. On easy treks like Tungnath, Dayara Bugyal and Kedarkantha, you will walk on a comfortable trail for 3 to 4 days. The maximum altitude gain is 12,000ft.
Note – The time duration of each workout is 30 minutes with easy intensity. Along with strength-building exercises, improve your cardiovascular endurance and time to complete 5 km under 40 minutes.
