Kudremukh Trek is touted as the prettiest trek in Karnataka. Perched in the heart of the Western Ghats, the trek is located inside Kudremukh National Park, and the name literally translates to horse’s mouth. The peak resembles a horse’s face and has earned the name Kudremukh.

Kudremukh Trek can be completed in a day. If you are travelling from Bangalore you can follow the itinerary below.
You can book any KSRTC bus that goes to Horandu via Kalasa. It takes roughly 7 to 8 hours to reach Kalasa.
Once you reach Kalasa, you can get on an intercity bus that will take you to the starting point of the trek. Start the trek from Mullodi village. It takes roughly 6 to 8 hours to cover the distance of 18 km. you can book your return journey on the same night.
Get on a city bus at the entrance of Kudremukh to reach Kalasa. Book an overnight bus to Bangalore.
Mullodi is the starting point of the trek. The base is around 325 km from Bangalore. To reach the trek’s starting point, consider the following travel options.
Board an overnight bus from Bangalore to Kalasa. Book your bus well in advance. It takes around 7 to 8 hours to cover a distance of 308 km. Board a bus that leaves at night to reach Kalasa in the morning. Once you reach Kalasa, wait for a city bus.
The buses start at 6:30 in the morning. The distance from Kalasa to the base of Kudremukh trek is approximately 10Kms. The bus charges ₹20 only. When you get on the bus, ask the bus driver or conductor to drop you off at the Kudremukh starting point.
The other option is to travel by train to the nearest railway station, Mangalore Railway Station. Mangalore railway station is around 100 km from the starting point of the trek.
The nearest airport is Mangalore Airport, located 115 km from Kalasa. The frequency of buses from Mangalore is lower than Bangalore which is 280 km from the starting point of the trek.

Mullodi Village is the base camp of the Kudremukh Trek.

You can complete Kudremukh Trek in one day. Begin your day early in the morning. It takes 4 to 5 hours to reach the peak, and roughly 2 to 3 hrs to descend. You need to be back at the base by 6 pm. Trekking is restricted beyond 6 pm by the forest department.

You can carry your tent. The other option is to book a tent at the top through the local agents/companies. If you reach the top in the afternoon, there will be sufficient options available for you to choose from. However, book your stay in advance to avoid last-minute hassle.

There are no food stalls on the trail. However, homestays at the base provide food. You have to order in advance. There are no water sources on the trek. You can carry water from the base.
If you are carrying trail snacks, pack them in reusable boxes. Packaged food items like chips and biscuits are not allowed.
Kudremukh Trek offers limited mobile network coverage. You will have access to a scanty network on some parts of the trail, however, expect no network at the top.
Camping is not allowed in Kudremukh. There are a few homestay options at the base and also offers a tent stay.
Pack some filling trail snacks as there are no options to purchase food along the trail. You can bring protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara, cake etc.
You can carry a first aid kit. If you have your prescribed medications, bring them on the trek.
You can do this trek on your own. But hiring a guide is mandatory. The Forest department has mandated a guide in a 1:10 ratio and assigns one for you.
