Sar Pass Trek is tucked away in the majestic Parvati Valley and is a perfect getaway to indulge in breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The trek boasts varied landscapes, including lush green alpine meadows, quaint walks in the forest, charming Himalayan villages and captivating snow-capped mountains.
The trail to Sar Pass takes you through enchanting sceneries. A fresh woody fragrance of deodar and pine forests, chirping birds, and snow-studded peaks entice you to climb further and discover more of the region. The breathtaking Tosh Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks create an idyllic moment to immerse your inner self amidst nature’s lap and discover newer perspectives. In addition to majestic landscapes, the trek offers a glimpse of the rich local culture and tradition, especially, the picturesque villages of Pulga and Grahan. It is heartening to indulge in meaningful conversations with the villagers. Their content and peaceful life away from the chaos of city life inspires you to appreciate small victories.
The trek begins from Kasol, the backpacking hotspot, and extends for five days. Sar Pass is a moderate-level trek with a few challenging terrains and offers an adventurous experience and the surreal beauty of the Himalayas.
On Day 1 of the trek, the trekkers arrive in Kasol, backpackers’s haven due to its bohemian vibe. Kasol is a hotspot for domestic and international explorers longing for a laid-back getaway. The place is home to many local cafes serving diverse cuisines.
Trek to Grahan village leads you through lush green forests and serene trails. The village is your first campsite. Its rustic charm captivates you to explore life in this remote Himalayan village.
The trail leading to the next campsite of Min Thach traverses steep ascents. A quaint walk amidst rhododendrons covered trail is dreamlike. After navigating an undulated terrain for roughly 4 to 5 hours, the sprawling meadows of Min Thach welcome you.
Min Thach campsite is a lush green meadow dotted with vibrant wildflowers, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Dense rhododendron bushes along with thick forest cover border the campsite of Min Thach, creating a perfect campsite location to indulge in nature’s bliss.
The day is challenging as you are climbing to the highest campsite of the Sar Pass trek. A steep ascent from the campsite leads you to a flat patch of land. Here onwards, you are up for a demanding walk on a snow-covered trail, under a direct sun. The treeline is left behind. After navigating steep ascents a rocky ridge line begins. Navigating this section is difficult and dangerous if it is covered in snow. You have to traverse the path cautiously.
After navigating the steep climb, a flat surface opens up where the Nagaru campsite sits. It surprises you with diverse sceneries. The trail offers magnificent views of the Parvati Valley, and the summit mesmerizes you with breathtaking views of Grahan village, the campsite you left behind and the snow-studded Himalayan peaks.
Today is the most challenging day as you traverse difficult terrain covered in snow for long hours. An uphill climb in the snow is taxing, but the serene surroundings keep your spirit high to keep moving. The chill in the air is piercing, so the drill is to keep moving at a slow pace to the top where the Sar Pass lies. After traversing the snow-covered trail for a few hours, the team reaches right in time to witness a breathtaking alpen glow on snow-studded peaks.
The descent to the campsite in Biskeri Thach is challenging requiring trekkers to remain alert while descending. After the initial descent, you climb on a steep ascent to Biskeri Top. From here, it’s a downhill route. When there is enough snow on the slope, trekkers enjoy a thrilling snow slide.
After a few hours of descent, a flat surface opens and rhododendrons blooms greet you once gain. The campsite of Biskeri Thach is nestled amidst mesmerising surroundings guarded by the serene sound of nature.
The Sar Pass Trek leads you through diverse landscapes. From lush green meadows to snow-covered Pass, it is a thrilling journey in the Himalayas. After being intrigued by nature’s wonders, it is time to descend through dense pine forests and cross a mountain river for one last time. Once you reach Barshaini, you can get a shared cab to Kasol. It takes around 2 hrs to reach Kasol from Barshaini.

The starting point of Sar Pass Trek is Kasol. After arriving in Kasol, the team treks to Grahan village, the first campsite on the same day.
Here are a few travel options to consider when travelling to the starting point of Sar Pass Trek
The fastest mode of transportation to reach Kasol is to fly to Kullu Airport in Bhuntar, located around 31 km from Kasol. You can fly from Delhi to Kullu Airport in 1.5 hrs. However, you will have limited flight options due to the low frequency of flights on this route.
Another option is to fly to Mohali Aiport, Chandigarh, followed by a road journey to Kasol. Kasol is around 300 km from Chandigarh. You can easily board a bus or taxi from Chandigarh to reach Kasol. It takes around 6 to 8 hours to reach Kasol from Chandigarh.
Kasol is not connected by rail with other cities. The nearest station is located at Joginder Nagar. You can board a train to Joginder Nagar and hire a cab/taxi to Kasol. It takes 3 to 4 hours to cover the distance of 144 km.
Kasol is around 531 km from Delhi. It takes roughly 11 to 12 hours to reach Kasol from Delhi by road. You can either drive to Kasol or travel by bus to Kullu. The bus will drop you at Kullu. From here, hire a cab to Kasol.
The most important thing to do on a trek to avoid AMS is to drink water, more than your daily intake. Water is an excellent way to avoid AMS. Along with this, you should also have all the nutritious meals we provide on the trek. If you still are sceptical about getting AMS, we would advise you to carry Diamox tablets with you. However, according to the situation your Outdoor leader will advise whether or not you should take it.
We encourage everyone to trek, even if or not they have a medical condition. We have an in-house doctor at OWLS with whom you can discuss your medical condition and accordingly, we can help you better prepare you for the trek.

Although we provide filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with morning tea and evening snacks, you can carry some light snacks for munching on the trail. You can carry protein bars, dry fruits, and homemade snacks like Shakkarpara to help you give that extra energy on the trek.
All our Outdoor Leaders are trained and experienced leaders. They have completed basic Mountaineering Course, and are equipped with basic first-aid knowledge. Our leaders are certified Wilderness First Responder course
You don’t need to carry your medical kit. If you have your prescribed medications, you need to carry them on the trek
The accommodation will be on twin sharing basis. One tent will be shared by two trekkers.
Yes. Communicate your requirement to the trek leaders beforehand, as it will be difficult to arrange to offload at the last minute. The offloading charges will be Rs 350 per bag, and your bag should not weigh more than 9 kg.
Note: At OWLs, we suggest our participants carry their backpacks and avoid offloading. However, in case of pressing circumstances, you can opt for offloading.
Yes, you can leave the extra luggage at the base camp. However, do not leave valuables like laptops, jewellery, or any other expensive items in the base camp.
The OWLS team will set up a toilet tent near the campsites. The toilets will be dry toilets and you will have to use toilet paper. There will be a pit dug by the team and you will have to cover your nature’s call with dry soil. Avoid using wet wipes, as they are not biodegradable. At OWLS, we thrive to leave no trace in the mountains.
At the base camp, you will have regular concrete toilets.
The food offered will be as per the nutritional requirements. As you will be walking every day for 4-6 hours, you will be burning a good amount of calories. The team makes sure that the food you will be offered is healthy and helps you sustain through the day. The regular meal comprises eggs, locally grown vegetables, rice, roti, and pulses. The menu changes from day to day.
The last place with a full mobile network will be Kasol. You will have access to a scanty network in some sections of the trail. However, do not expect a functional network on the trek and make important calls from Kasol.
