Ladakh Cultural Trip Overview

Ladakh Cultural Trip is an immersive cultural exposure to witness Ladakh the local way.

Join us for a five-day-long sojourn, away from the chaos of notifications and indulge in self-exploration, seek inspiration, and practice mindfulness.

OWLS is initiating a pilot project of ‘Live Like a Local’ in the remote village of Ladakh. We invite a community longing to chase happiness while discovering the inner self amidst the serene landscapes of Ladakh’s interior.

The programme is curated for people yearning to live life differently, though momentarily. You will discover yourself, encounter different cultures, and connect with like-minded people. Experience that lets you delve deep, gauge life from different perspectives, and derive peace and joy while you are at it. The experience aims to bring you close to nature and beyond clicking Instagrammable pictures.

Who is it for?

When our team spent a few days in the remote village of Tirido, we realised how perfect this place can be for people longing for a pause and live with different perspectives, though momentarily.

We know for a fact that life often tends to digress. While we rush to get hold of it, we lose ourselves in the process. We say it’s okay to step back, pause, and vanish into a world completely different from yours. If you feel consumed in your everyday life or yearning for a getaway, live like a local is an experience totally for you.

Crafted for a community of explorers, writers, photographers, artists, adventurers, researchers, creators, and anyone yearning for a musing by the mountains that leaves a noticeable impact. Here, the experience is beyond social media posts. In the remote village, you connect with yourselves and listen to stories of locals and their humble yet content lives. You will reflect on your everyday activities and in the process, endeavor to rediscover the inner you amidst the wilderness.

Come experience the life of Ladakhis at 13000 ft in the quaint village of Tirido. The village of Teri resonates with art, culture, and rich heritage dotted with breathtaking and magical landscapes.

Ladakh Cultural Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Touch down in Leh

You will land in Leh and spend a night here for acclimatisation. Meet the rest of the group here and head out to explore Leh city in the evening. Remember to indulge in hot garlic soup as it helps you to acclimatise better.

Day 2 : Travel to the Pashmina land of Tirido

You will leave early in the morning for Tirido village. The village is nestled amidst the lunar landscape of Ladakh. It is around 100 kms east of Leh in the Changthang region. Here, you will spend the night in a traditional Ladakhi homestay and savour home-cooked Ladakhi cuisine.

Tirido village is known for small-scale industries that produce exclusive Pashmina. Here, the classic pashmina, the exquisite textile, is weaved by the locals. You will witness the process of Pashmina weaving and try your hands at it.

Day 3 : Fruit plucking and making local products

You will indulge in the process of plucking the fruit and turning it into a final product. The villagers produce Apricot jams from freshly plucked fruits from their garden.

Sounds exciting?

We will celebrate the day and express gratitude while stargazing and listening to stories at 12,000 ft. under a star-studded night sky by the bonfire. Indulge in what makes you happy, dance your heart out, or perhaps host a musical evening for your bunch. You will have a safe space for your stories, and develop new bonds.

Day 4 : Tryst with nature

Day 4 will challenge your mind, body, and soul. The team will head out for an early morning hike to Teri Phu post breakfast.

The place is frequented by exquisite Himalayan wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may spot the Ghost cat (Snow leopard), highly elusive Eurasian Lynx, Himalayan wolf, Red fox, Blue sheep, and the Pika.

The tryst with wildlife will be followed by a visit to the famous Teri Phu monastery.

Day 5 : Return to Leh

After an array of experiences, a series of reflections, and days full of contentment, it is time to resume life. You will head to Leh today recharged by nature in the wilderness. Living like a local will teach you to be grateful for everything you have in life as you descend to the bustling and quintessential city of Leh.

How to reach Tirido for the Ladakh Cultural Trip?

The pick-up point of the Ladakh Live-like a local program is Leh. Leh is the capital of the union territory of the Ladakh region. Perched at an elevation of 11,000 ft, Leh is one of the most beautiful towns in the Ladakh region.

Leh is the starting point of Ladakh Cultural tour. One must first reach Leh on Day 0. The City is well connected by air to major Indian cities. You can fly directly to Leh or travel by road from Srinagar/Manali.

If you prefer travelling by road, Leh is accessible via the Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar – Leh highway.

Srinagar to Leh

You can travel on shared cabs or buses from Srinagar to reach Leh. It is suggested to halt on the way. The distance of 437 km is covered in 11-14 hrs. You can opt for a night halt in the major towns of Sonmarg, Drass and Kargil.

Manali to Leh

If you travel from Manali to Leh by road, you can opt for shared cabs or bus services. The other option is to travel by private and HRTC buses from Manali to Leh. The distance between Manali and Leh is around 454 km and is covered in a 15- 16 hour drive.

What OWLS recommend while you plan your travel for an awesome experience:

  • While getting to Leh, we recommend you arrive a day earlier and stay at Leh (Day 0). Staying at Leh gives you a well-deserved rest for the night.
  • If you are travelling from Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai or any other city, book your air tickets for Day 0, which is the day before the start day on the itinerary.
  • We highly recommend travelling by air to Leh as any other modes of transport will eventually cost the same. Flying to Leh is convenient, while other options are likely to exert you before your journey begins
  • Keep a buffer day for emergencies. Your Program is 5 days long, but keep an extra 6th day as your buffer day. This is outside the itinerary. You cannot predict bad weather, landslides or political situations. If you don’t use the buffer day, you can always explore Leh City and small villages like Shey, Saboo, Nimo and Alchi.
  • To book your return flight/train tickets after including the buffer day in your itinerary.
